THE CHRISTIAN CALENDAR

ACCORDING TO THE USE OF

THE CHRISTIAN EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF CANADA

The Greater Holy-days which are appointed to be observed are indicated in Red Letters. The Lesser Commemorations are indicated in Black Letters. The Red Letter Days each have their own proper Introits, Collects, Epistles, and Gospels, which are set forth in the Book of Common Prayer. The Black Letter Days may also be observed by using the common propers which are provided therefor after the propers appointed for the Red Letter Days.

The following Calendar has been compiled from the ancient calendars of the Christian Church, using for its basis the Calendar of the Church as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662 together with those commemorations which were included in the 1928 Deposited Book of Common Prayer. Those commemorations which were included in the 1929 revision of the Book of Common Prayer of the Scottish Episcopal Church and in the 1962 revision of the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church of Canada have also been included in this Calendar. Likewise, such other commemorations as are found in the ancient calendars of the Latin and Greek Churches, and of those national Churches in communion with them; in the ancient calendars of the Church in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, and Cornwall and Britanny; and in the ancient calendars of the national Churches of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, and France; all of which have either been venerated in England or have had a Church or Chapel dedicated to the honour of their memory in England, or else have had a close connexion with the Church of England, have also been included in the following Calendar.

The commemoration of the names of those who have departed this life in the faith and fear of Jesus Christ and in the Communion of the Church of England since the Reformation, and especially of the Church of England in the Dominion of Canada, are included in a separate addendum to this Calendar. And let it here be noted that the names of persons of importance in the history of the Church of England, the Church of England in the Dominion of Canada, and of the Anglican Communion, which have been included in this Calendar, are included herein for the instruction and edification of the faithful without necessarily enrolling or commending such persons as Saints of the Church.
